After a couple of failed outings with friends to watch Kolumpo in Kolumpo itself, I finally caught it at my hometown yesterday at TGV Tebrau City, JB yesterday! Knowing me, I've always been an avid fan of independent local films and music, it was just predictable for me to catch Kolumpo. Got to know about the film when I was at the Kakiseni Arts Festival Street Parade back in May actually when the box head crew were part of the parade, giving out free aiskrim Malaysia! Then, I didn't know what it was about, I thought it was just a really cool arts demonstration. It wasn't until I checked out their pages on social media that I found out it was a film coming out in December! I feel it was great marketing tactics, nevertheless!

Nope, it's not a protest! It's the Kolumpo Box Head Crew! (Photo credits to Muiz)

Okay, before I go on and on about meeting the cast and all, I'll talk about what I thought about the film. Of course, the film turned out amazing! To those who aren't familiar with Kolumpo the film, here's a little insight. Kolumpo's basically a compilation of 3 simple and light-hearted short films directed by 3 young budding Malaysian filmmakers, with a passionate all-Malaysian cast and crew, for Malaysians. Despite having the diversity of three separate stories, I think all three of them portrays a fresh, grappling-yet-honest side of the beautiful city of Kuala Lumpur and weaves a tale of hope and dreams as diverse as the very fabric of the magnificent city itself.

  • The first short film directed by the handsome and multi-talented Bront Palarae, depicts a young Indian immigrant worker who came to Kolumpo in hopes of making an honest living to support his family back in India, only to find that the company that offered him a job had closed down. (Un)fortunately, he is saved by a restaurant owner and there and then begins his life of an illegal immigrant worker in the bustling city of KL. (Look out for that familiar cheater of a cab driver which provided the audience with a lot of laughs, trust me)
  • Young budding director, Rozi Izma directed the second piece which was set in Setapak where a young unmarried woman trying to avoid calls from her mother, finds herself spending the whole day trying to bring a senile amnesiac nenek home. And you know how Amnesia can be, the nenek brought her all over Kuala Lumpur. I particularly liked this story because it made me realise how we take a lot of things for granted especially the love our loved ones have for us. By the end of this short film, I admit that a little drop of tear slided down my right cheek. (Get ready to laugh and cry in this one, it is that heartfelt, I promise)
  • Set in Ampang, director Sheikh Munasar brings us on a midnight journey of a young man who has never been in love before and meets a whimsically optimistic stranger after they both missed the last train. Meeting her was a life-defining moment for him as she showed him a glimpse of love through the people they meet and the conversations they made. This film was simple, honest and thought-provoking, for me. Thought-provoking in terms of how we judge people on the way they dress, the way they act and what it really means to be 'the better person'. It reminded me a lot of Parah, the play I saw last May, but instead of pulling out the race card, this was more of how society sees a certain person by the way they act. (I guess, yo have to watch the movie to truly understand what I'm trying to say here haha)

Silly me, initially thought Sharifah Amani and Sheikh Munasar (aka Moon) were gonna be sitting in front of me during the movie haha I would have laughed at my expression when I saw two tudung-clad ladies walking towards the rows in front of me. But after the movie whilst credits were rolling, the pixie-like Sharifah Amani appeared from the back entrance with a bunch of people and including Moon! I was trying to keep my crazy hyper fangirling to the minimum but shamelessly failed, as portrayed in the pictures below.

They are such down-to-earth, friendly people! It was great to be able to have a short conversation with both of them, especially Moon 'cause most people were flocking towards Nanina for pictures. Mum was equally excited and were singing praises for their work. Moon asked to interview us after our little conversation and that was what we did! Once I started speaking, I just can't stop! I think we spoke about how we felt about this film for much longer than what Moon had expected us to haha! Check @kolumpothemovie on Instagram to see what we said, though sadly Mum's part got cut off 'cause I think I was talking too much :P (Sorry, mom!)

Overall, Kolumpo is the epitome of a true-blue homegrown Malaysian film, made by Malaysians for Malaysians. If you like Yasmin Ahmad films, I think you'll really enjoy this one as it's spontaneous, simple, heartwarming, familiar, delightful and just truly Malaysian. So if you haven't catch Kolumpo yet or you're still waiting for somebody to belanja you a ticket, go watch it 'cause you're missing out biggggg time I'm telling you!

And if you're still skeptical about the quality of local films,
'kalau tak tengok, macam mana nak tahu?'

Planning a Pre-University prom right now with my Student Council homies.
It's gonna one fantastic event to be remembered! ;D

The holidays are finally back and I'd be lying if I tell you I'm not one bit excited! The holidays mean doing whatever we want, anytime we felt like it, no deadlines, no Monday blues, no school stress! I remember when I was in primary school and I hated going to school so much that I'd straight-up lie my ass away to get a day off. Without thinking of the consequences and the 'reasons' I have to come out with the next day. From stomach aches to headaches, you name it. I've said it! Damn, you must think I was some kind of rebel when I was in school huh? Well, do consider that I was never great in mandarin and that every other subject (except English) were in Mandarin. So, my morale to school everyday was practically down at level negative despite the level boost once a day during English class, that is.

Anyway, who doesn't love the holidays right? That week or two of sweet, sweet freedom.

And I'm sure for those who have been reading my blog or are close enough to me, you'd know that i have been really addicted this lil' thing called Google Reader recently and now I can call blog-spotting, a hobby. Nope, blog-spotting isn't a real word that you can find in Websters or Oxford. Don't worry, I loved English class and the English language, thank you very much. Though I have nothing against Mandarin, just the mandarin classes and the canes, just saying. I have spotted quite a lot of awesome blogger out there and some of them actually blog for a living and my, their blogs are GREAT (understatement!) It has become like a routine for me to go straight to Google Reader and read, read, read! I even have the app on my mobile! I guess, this is a good thing, inspired me to wanna write/blog more to inspire others. Inspiration plays a humongous part in my life, now that I've becoming lazier to do anything that I'm not interested in but is a necessity, like homework and house chores. I need that extra boost of morale or that extra something to push me forward. Be it, a cuppa coffee, an article on Hello Giggles or even a page from a good book.

As I said in my previous post about the photo challenge thingy, I am attempting it, fo' realz! Though I didn't really get to capture a picture every day this week as much as I'd love to, you know the exams and all the studying pretty much, fried my brains. so, I've put up some of my photos I took during my exchange trip in South Africa :)

WEEK ONE

1 - Up
This was taken on top of Table Mountain, Cape Town with Jynn. It was an hour after my whole heatwave-fainting incident which left me red-faced and hyperventilating most of the time but I wasn't gonna let my heat-phobic physique keep me from seizing the day and having fun! I mean, how many times do you get to be on top of Table Mountain in your whole life right? Unless you're a local. Anyway, It was a one-in-a-lifetime experience and to share it with amazing peeps, new and treasured, was very fulfilling.

2 - Fruit
Purple dragon fruit! I think you can say it's my second favourite fruit in the world? My first would be Guava. It is said  to be juicier and sweeter than the white ones but I can never tell the difference, really. But this is definitely more acidic than the white ones. Not citrus acidic but more of tongue-cutting acidic. But all in all, fruits are amazing and does amazing things to your system. And, tomato is a fruit, apparently.

3 - Neighbourhood
You know how mornings are always gloomy and sleepy. And when I say morning, I mean, at around 6am, getting ready for another day at school. Definitely not mornings by the beach, catching the sunrise with messy salty hair and your man jogging back to you and your beach-house from a morning surf. That drizzly morning however saw me, witnessing a lil' stray pup running towards my brother who was locking the gate with its little fluff-ball tail wagging. It dries itself and cuddled, almost to my brother's feet under the umbrella. And I thought it was the cutest thing ever! Sadly, we had to leave and so it was let into my neighbour's porch. When we came back, my neighbour fed it milk and some bread and there it was under her car, posing as though it knew I was capturing that moment with my phone. My neighbour left it somewhere I'm not sure, hope it's in somewhere safe.

 4 - Bedside
Coffee is God's gift to human energy. It kept me going during this whole week, I'd say and when I was getting my usual cuppa coffee today, the container was empty. It ran out. Well, I guess God had it planned all this while. The right amount of packets of coffee in the container to last me exactly one week, till the exams are over. Now I settle with white coffee, which I find fine. The aroma itself got me going and it did taste extraordinary. And yes, I am starting to think Starbucks is overrated.

 5 - Smile
Taken in The Palace of Sun City, Johannesburg, South Africa. I can never forget that we had a chance to get into the The Palace for free after a few calls were made by Uncle Rusty, who is a big shot in the whole North West Province Game Reserve world. I really admire his work of capturing people who hunts down rhinos for their horns. I think that he is a really noble person and I'm extremely proud to have had him and Nan as host parents. I miss them so much and of course, their South African hospitality! Mis jou baie, Rusty + Nan!

6 - 5PM
I guess this doesn't need any caption or description whatsoever, does it? ;D

 7 - Something I Wore
The art of dressing up for no apparent reason. You know sometimes, when life catch up to you and you can't handle the constant pressure of being the person you're expected to be, the one who's always doing the right things at the right time and the only outlet you can go to is to do something really crazy for no specific reason, whatsoever? Well,  I came back from school , feeling fried and not motivated at all,  like you could've studied more for an exam. And so, I opened my closet and dug out this dress that I thrifted overseas and decided to wear it for the day. No apparent reason, just giving in to that crazy random thought and hope to be inspired. Sometimes, you need these days to keep you going. These moments might just be the little overlooked minutes of our lives that made the difference.

8 - Window
Taken today! I really like this corner of my room. I call it my Wall of Awesomeness. it's where pictures of my treasured experience and friends are blu-tacked on the wall to remind me of the awesome people around me and the many great adventures that made me who I am now. The outgoing, outspoken, spontaneous, wanderlust chick. I admit, most of the pictures were taken in South Africa. Well, that's the recent one and of course, the only time I've been overseas (minus Singapore, it was a part of Malaya after all!) and not on a holiday but an exchange program where I got to meet extremely awesome peeps.

...

okay, I shall post up a post about photo challenge every Friday then!
So, stay close! :DD

Love is a safe haven – where you go to hide from the rest of the world outside.
Love is not always patient nor kind but it never, ever tears you down.
Love knows when you have had a bad day and pours you a glass of wine to the top of the rim without a single ounce of judgment.
Love makes sure the blankets cover your feet.
Love doesn’t make you feel guilty for sleeping in on the weekends.
Love is peaceful breath on your forehead in the middle of the night.
Love knows that you like to be kissed on the corner of your closed eyelid.
Love is a white clam pizza and Netflix, content to just be home together.
Love wordlessly gives you your daily dose of morning coffee, knowing your hands are very much capable to make it yourself.
Love defends you to other people even when you’re being a real asshole.
Love is a conversation across the room without words, Ready to leave? Me too.

Is This Love?

Sigh.

I am in an emo state of mind these few days. Especially yesterday / was it the day day before? hmph. After talking with the girls and realising some stuff. Stuff about why people treat me a certain way, or why are people not responding to my actions and even they respond, it all seems awkward and weird.

Awkward like you expects someone to smile or laugh but instead they look like they are being shrugged off and offended. Weird like when you make a funny face, well, funny to you, at least, all in a good intention, and all you get back from them isn't a smile, not even close, sometimes.

It gets really frustrating sometimes when all your intentions were good and positive and it doesn't feel that way on the other person's point of view. The feeling sucks. Worse still, if he/she isn't a close friend, probably just an acquaintance, a person who you've met a couple days prior. He/she might not have stalked you on your Facebook profile and not have looked through all your funny-ass pictures, knowing that you're a certain kind of people. Normal case scenario, people judge you in a certain light by checking you out by your Facebook wall/ profile. Or by first impressions. First impressions are way important but then again, you can't judge a book by it's cover, they say. True. But who can help not to? I am dead serious, btw.

So, in this particular case of mine, it is a he-species. Shit. I made him sound like an animal. Rawr
LOL A sheep perhaps, Naomi? (According to Naomi, he's the sheep and i'm the hunter, about to shoot it dead. Poor sheep) I shall stick to X, just because i like and miss finding out what X is, maths. Heh. And so, X is not at all active on this awesome electronic communication mean, called Facebook. And, i mean, what kind of pre-adult are you? Right? So that means First Impression, it is.

So, we met a couple of weeks before but was just simple acquaintances. You know, we were in hello-smile-bye basis. nothing more and nothing less. Just acquaintances. Period. And his story was fascinating and it kinda took me by storm. I don't know why and have no specific reason but I just felt IT. You know, the feeling inside when a Christmas song comes on and your feelings all lifted. Gawd, that's what i call, bad description skills. Pardon that.

And so last weekend, we had class together, yes, we were in the same class. X looked over and smiled at me. Coincidentally, I was half-biting my lips.Guess I was just being weird ol' wacky Charmaine! And when i glanced at him. In respond to his friendly 'hello' smile, I gave him a funny-ass face with my teeth still on my lips. I thought it was funny and you know, would make people laugh. Well, can't blame me, I like spreading happiness to the world via the people around me! And if you know me well enough, I'm so not afraid to put out funny-ass faces just to get a giggle or a laugh from you, be it at me or with me! Sadly, he didn't.

The week after, he gave me a neutral look.

The week after that, he just looked.

Seems like that one funny-ass face came out the wrong way, and he took it that way. Sucks for me, really. One less smiley person :(

No, really, it wasn't just about making X like me or talk to me but basically, making someone think that I was unfriendly or being a blunt-ass bitch. I do not like making me hate me. It's the worst feeling ever! And now, it's haunting me, everyday. I don't blame him or anyone who feels that i'm being unfriendly or such, nor do i want them to feel like i'm such a bitch. Cuz i am really not. It's not me to make someone feel less-liked. Is that even a word?

Sigh.

Looks like I have to fix this myself without a funny-ass face but with being sane and grounded. Leave the funny-ass face for later, when we know each other better, perhaps. And for little annoying little kids.
