Where to Eat // Roost Salad Bar

roost salad bar

Last Saturday, after a trip to Paso Bumbong 2012, the flea market I went to with Nay, Klaud and my bro, we decided to have dinner at this new branch of this cool vintage-sque bistro called Roost Salad Bar. We got there at 5.30pm and then found out that it doesn't open till 6pm. So, after walking around at some vintage boutiques and some thrift shops around the area, our stomachs got hold of us and so, we got to the old branch of Roost to have some solid dinner, before getting to the new one for coffee. You might have read about my trip to Roost Juice + Bar here

After dinner, we walked along Jalan Dhoby to Roost Salad Bar for drinks and to chill out. Once at the entrance, it is required for us to place our order and foot the bill there and then before heading up a flight of really steep stairs to the lounging area. What's on the menu? Frozen yogurt which you can choose the toppings as you wish, various types of coffee and salads. We were quite full after a heavy dinner, so Klaudia opted for a frozen yogurt and the rest of us went for sweet, sweet coffee.

The whole concept of this new Roost bar is Repurposed + Recycled. Almost everything in the bistro is made out of recyclable materials. Seats made out of dustbins, newspapers, toilet roll cores; Tables made out of cardboard, mounting boards etc. It is a really fresh concept that will definitely cater to the younger and hipster crowds of today and I think its is a really great way to promote green-living and innovation. It's pretty difficult to imagine through just words, so scroll down for visuals!

opens at six. pm.

All drinks come in two cup sizes, 16oz and 22oz.
As usual, my inquisitive mind led me walking around to the huge wall of books, checking out each and every thing that were there. There were classic books, a bunch of travelogues, cookbooks, old How-to books, old records and some antique decor. All of which looked old and worn out, which compliments the whole concept really well. It was like a mini library. I was in awe.

Such a beautiful mess: I like how the book shelves fall in place so well and who wouldn't have thought old water pipes could hole books so wells!

Don't let looks fool you! The chairs made out of toilet roll cores (right) were actually really comfortable.

If you're more of a outdoorsy person who loves taking in fresh air and feel the natural breeze  instead of the air-conditioned environment, there's also a open air lounging area, looking out towards the skyline of Jalan Dhoby and streetlights. Another thing that caught my eye would be the lightings. They are all just a single bulb in glass bottles, teacups and saucers or held by more water pipes!

Now on to the drinks and company, I got a cup of iced cappuccino (22oz) and my bro got a cup of iced mocha (22oz), RM8.90 each. It came with shot glasses of syrup so it is up to you to add how much you want into your coffee. In my humble opinion, my iced cappuccino tasted heavenly. It just might be better than the over-rated Starbucks, you know. My brother loved his iced mocha. Nay got her Caramel Cappuccino which she loved and Klaudia was happy with her frozen yogurt. I stole a spoon of her fozen yogurt and I dare say that it is one smooth frozen yogurt. Overall, I think it is a bar worth coming again.

Roost Salad Bar left a good impression on us all and I'd definitely bring my family and my friends here for a cuppa coffee soon. And I think you should give it a try too!

Fair warning though, do not park your vehicle by the Segget river if you're gonna stay there after 7pm unless you don't mind your car being PART of the JB bazaar that starts around that time. I suggest you park at the parking lots in front of the post office and do some walking along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee to Jalan Dhoby. Speaking from experience here!
