JOHO Paso Bumbong 2012 @ Plaza Seni

Last weekend, I went to this:

"Paso Bumbong" being the Johorean slang for "Pasar Bumbung", direct translates to "Rooftop Market" and is basically this flea market JOHO does every year, showcasing independent local fashion by young entrepreneurs, breaking into the fashion industry in JB. I was aware about this event a month before and was pretty excited as it's not everyday a local youth organisation holds these events for the youth, especially in Johor Bahru! You might have heard of me mentioning about JOHO and the wonderous stuff they did in my previous post here

It's held on the rooftop parking area of Plaze Seni (the Art Plaza) in town from 3pm till midnight. But since I had to get home by 8pm, I checked it out at around 3.45pm and grabbed Klaudia, Naomi and my brother to tag along. There were booths selling trinkets, accessories, clothes, a whole pile of secondhand clothing (I guess that's where the word FLEA in 'flea market' comes to play), shoes, bags, home decor, scraves, books etc. Stuff expected to find in a flea market.

It was pretty windy on the rooftop, despite the glaring sun poking my skin and sweat trickling down weird places. Naomi and I tried not to whip out our water bottles in front of the crowd as they were ALL, and I'm even exaggerating, they were ALL Malays! Not being racists here, just stating the facts and giving you readers an insight on the demographics. And i think they have a little more flair in loving these kind of things, you know. That's what I see I have a little something in common with them.lol And of course, I felt proud, in a way that I was one of the four people there of Chinese heritage, the other three being Nay, Klaud and my bro. At the same time, I felt a little intimidated. HAHA Go figure! Since it was Ramadan season, as a gesture of respect, we did drink but we did it with our backs facing them.lol One Malaysia, right?

When we got there, it was quite confusing. There were two long queues and nobody knew what the heck we were queuing for except for the ones right in the front. We just followed the crowd and stood in one of the lines. It took us about 30minutes to get to the front then, we realised it was for people who wanted to get JOHO merchandise. I stoned. Sigh, we should've asked the people in front before queuing, really. Time wasted and lesson learnt.

and so, we finally walked out of our line and walked to the booths, since none of us wanted to buy anything. A few booths were already up and running. Some sold pretty stuff but was kind of overpriced and some just sold extremely ugly stuff, in my opinion. Can't imagine anybody wanting to get some of the secondhand stuff on the racks but then again, someone's junk might be some other person's treasure. So, I guess I CAN imagine.lol

If you know me well enough, you'll know that I love flea markets, vintage stuff, and likes to be involved in youth arts events and festivals. Although I didn't really enjoy this flea market as much as I hoped to, at least I got something, got to catch up with my friends and support this local event. And, I dare not judge it and say it sucked cuz I was there only for the initial part of the event, I wasn't there at night and there was an open mic gig, a big break fast get together and other fun stuff, all which I obviously missed.
