Kacang Pool Haji // Medan Selera Larkin Bomba

Last Tuesday, some of my classmates and I had this spontaneous lunch-out at this awesome Malay food court located right beside the Larkin fire department. the girls were craving for the infamous Ice Kacang there and I was eager to give Kacang Pool Haji a try, since they were head over heels over it. I have never tried Kacang Pool and so, it was a new food experience, for me! Fayad and I drove the girls there. Parking is free-of-charge but it is limited at peak hours. We got there at about two in the afternoon, right after the business lunch hour, so there were plenty of empty parking spots. The vicinity of the area is clean and there weren't any cats around, so, that earned a plus, from me!

Kacang Pool, which hails from Javanese cuisine, is a dish where a block of toasted bread is served with a seperate bowl of minced beef and beans relish, blended with freshly chopped red and white onions and chunks of green chilli and topped with a bull's eye. It is best eaten with the bread. The tangy taste of the minced beef with the beans slowly exudes into your tastebuds and stimulates a bit of soury taste but it is then balanced equally with the slight saltiness and burnt char-toasted bread. It is really worth a try!

Being not a huge avid fan of Ice Kacang (or sometimes called, ABC) that I am, I ordered the Iced Cikong instead. But that doesn't mean i didn't steal some spoons of Ice Kacang from my friends! Haha. The Ice Kacang here, I must say, is pretty good. Chocolate-fudge and pink syrup drizzled shaved ice, with the assortment of jellies underneath with red beans, Atap Chi and Cincau and topped off with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, cendol and nuts. Exactly how a decent Ice Kacang should have. it was perfect on a hot afternoon like that, to cool the senses, after a long day of mugging.

The Leng Cikong (Iced Cikong) I had was really good, in my humble opinion. The ones I normally had in other stalls weren't served with shaved ice but just ordinary ice cubes. So, this was a milestone better! The assortment of jellies, cincau, longan and atapchi beneath the mountain of shaved ice were of a generous amount. And, yup, it's worth a second try.

We shared the Tauhu Bakar as we knew we couldn't finish it if we ordered separately and at the same time, we really wanted to try the ones here. I think, this was also my first time trying this. It was better than I expected it to be, really! The fried tofu didn't tasted sour and the relish that came with it was tangy and all kinds of savoury.

It is best to chomp down Malaysian foodies with good Malaysian buddies! Not only will you get to know more about the food but also, deep dark secrets of your buddies. Haha I'm just kidding! There's really nothing like a good meal with good company. So, rope in some friends and have a good time!

The place opens everyday (except Monday) from 7.00am till 1.00am and is usually packed with hungry working-class heroes during peak hours. So, be sure to give it a try, either for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner or supper! Or for all five meals! LOL
