Makan Roadtrip!

After a few failed attempts due to busy schedules and cranky mums, I finally went out with the threeblackwidows on Monday! Since we really wanted to try out the much-talked-about mille crepes from this cafe called Maco Cafe & Bakery and it doesn't open till 12pm, we decided to meet for tea. I have heard about crepe cakes a while back when my dad took home a brochure from his then-workplace around the Pasir Gudang area but we've never made a point to get there and try it out. So, I was pretty eager to sink my teeth into one. We all met at my house and went by one car 'cause only Nay was familiar with the place and we wanted to save the Earth, one carbon footprint at a time. I can say we all were excited as we finally got to dress up after having to either stay at home or sit for papers in school for the past three weeks. Gup looked like she jumped out of a rad fashion blog from Tumblr and Nay looked summery and a tad bit scandalous with some lace-trim peeking out of her floral dress. LOL My outfit for the day? a flowery summer dress with a denim shirt with my new pair of Mary Jane Crocs!

There was a wide array of mille crepes and macaroons to choose from. There's Almond, Musang Durian, Caramel, Mocha etc. But we settled for the Rum + Raisin one, hoping it will do justice to its infamous name. Baskin Robbin's Rum and Raisin, ring a bell?

It was extremely milky and creamy, till a level that in my opinion, overpowered the rich flavour of rum. To drinkers, if you're hoping to get your cheeks rosy, this is definitely not for you. I could barely taste the rum, to be honest! LOL To non-drinkers who would want to know what rum taste like, I suggest you either get the Baskin Robbin's ice cream or drink a sip of plain rum. All I tasted was milk and cream. I'd probably give it a 1/5 :(

The set-up and decor of the place is really simple, cosy and it brings a slight Southern American country-side feel to it. The chalkboards remind me this restaurant in Richmond, Virginia A Girl Named Leney went to called Comfort. And they sell coffee too! Which I plan to try the next time I come!

The Mushroom and Ham quiche we shared was really tasty and the salad that came with it was savoury as well! The generosity of Maco in stuffing mushrooms into the quiche was exceptionally great. Nay said it was to a point where it made her want to throw up due to excessive mushrooms! LOL This quiche reminded me of the homemade quiche Lily made during Chinese New Year. Now that quiche was filled with all kinds of goodness, from caramelized onions, ham slices, mushroom, spinach and a whole lot of cheese. Mmmm... well, I guess homemade stuff always taste slightly better.

We headed to Sutera Mall to walk around and kill some time, since I planned to take them to town for dinner and the streets aren't alive till about 6pm. And another thing was 'cause we thought it'd be great for Gup to explore a bit since she hasn't stepped foot around the area before. We literally whizzed through the entire two-storey mall in an hour and I'm not even joking. LOL Nay and I got Cone Pizzas in between the whizzing around. It was heavenly!

I was actually thinking of bringing both little pretzels to That's Cafe initially 'cause I was kind of craving for the Salmon Pasta they served there, but it doesn't open until about 7pm and I thought it's just the Salmon Pasta's that's pretty good. The others are just mediocre. So, Roost Juice +Bar it was!

The Red Building, where the JOHO Indie Film Screening was held last month.
We walked along the few streets and I showed them the Red House aka The Red Building, The Scandalist which sold vintage pre-loved clothing and accessories and It Roo Cafe where my folks used to bring me when I was a kid. They seemed pretty amused as I was when I found out that there was this kind-of vintage boutiques and thriftshops. Maybe 'cause I keep reading all these blogs about vintage thriftshops that sell neat stuff, indie folk music, little cosy cafes where we sip coffee and immerse ourselves in words and meaningful conversation that i never thought, in a million years that they exists in Johor Bahru!

Of course, we went into The Girl Next Door, the boutique that was connected to Roost's top storey, selling vintage clothing, collectibles and lomo cams that also doubles (triples) up as a hair salon. Saw this really nice vintage Aztec-printed or knitted briefcase hung on the wall which costs RM389. My heart dropped. I think I'll the similar one from Fossil, Thanks.

"Suck it, bitch!" says the door.
We went in anyway.
The many facades of Gurpreet the Gorgeous.
Gup's Cappuccino, Nay's Strawberry Trips and my Relaxer.
Nay and mine came in buckets! I had a Relaxer (RM6.90) which is a healthy blend of strawberries + bananas + kiwis + yogurt + a little bit of sunshine! Nay's Strawberry Trips consists of berries + yogurt, I think. Honestly, I prefered mine. hehe!
Mentaiko Pasta (RM14.90)
I was kind of reluctant to order this Mentaiko Pasta just because I wasn't too keen on eating cold pasta as dinner. I usually like solid hot food for dinner to last me till the next morning. But I guess, I wanted to try something new and nothing's gonna stop me from that! I ended up ordering it and not regretting it! Mentaiko Pasta's spaghettini tossed with a Japanese-style grapefruit salad sautee and seaweed served with Pollock poe and shrimp poe. I personally loved the whole meal! Definitely a 5/5!

Chicken Chop (RM12.90)
Nay's chicken chop served with the usual baked beans, fries, coleslaw, salad and black pepper sauce was really tasty as well. I personally thought the deep-fried chicken was fried perfectly with a tender texture and juicy on the inside. It was definitely above average and I give it a 4/5!

Nyonya Fish FIllet with Rice (RM12.90)
Gup has pretty good taste in food, ordering this Nyonya dish 'cause I loved the fish fillets with the spicy and sour Nyonya sauce a lot! Although it was a little too spicy and overwhelming, but hey? That's what Nyonya flavours are all about, no? I also like how the fish fillets were in a rose shape, as if they folded the fish fillets into a rose. LOL This is a no-brainer - 5/5! I'll definitely come back to have the whole plate to myself! Muahahaha...

After a really satisfying dinner, Gup's folks came to get her and I drove home with Nay's mom picking her up from my house. It was nice to see each other out of uniform and all dolled up. I felt really tired after all those driving but it was so fun!  Great foodies + Great company = A great way to kickstart the holidays!

so, haaaave you met Ted at mi hacienda? ;)
